Hiroshi Senju, the Artist who Paints Waterfalls

From Philadelphia to Naoshima Island, the works of this Japanese artist line walls all over the world. A proponent of nihonga (traditional Japanese style of painting), Hiroshi Senju is known for his large-scale waterfall paintings. Through his creations, he manages to transcribe the atmosphere of untamed nature with calmness and serenity.
His waterfalls can be admired at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo, at the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden in Philadelphia, on the ‘art island’ of Naoshima, in a former private home, or in the museum which bears his name. The latter, designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa in Karuizawa and opened in 2011, houses one hundred of Senju’s works, presented against a totally white backdrop.
