Izumi Miyazaki, Selfie Queen

© Izumi Miyazaki
Everyone’s taking selfies, but no one even comes close to Izumi Miyazaki, who could teach Kim Kardashian a thing or two. It would be a little perfunctory to reduce this artist from Yamanashi to this practice, but she has clearly made it her speciality. Her works are offbeat, surreal and mind-blowing. In one, her head has been cut off; in another, it takes the form of an egg breaking; and in another, it acts as a sushi tray. Miyazaki imagines truly bonkers situations, for instance being lost in a broccoli forest. A real nightmare.
Miyazaki discovered photography at a young age, when she pinched her grandfather’s Pentax film camera. She was surprised to find that she could finally take the kind of photos she wanted to see and have fun in the process. After studying at art school, she started posting her images online, which aroused people’s curiosity. Since then, her work has been exhibited all over the world, from Paris to Kyoto. Who hasn’t ever feared drowning in an ocean of wheat flour? Izumi Miyazaki certainly has not.
