Vending machines: there are over five million in Japan, which equates to one for every 23 people. Most surprising of all is the fact that they can be found in remote places, like at the foot of a snowy mountain, in a dark and gloomy alley, right in the middle of a seemingly deserted car park, or next to a disused bus shelter. When night falls, their light illuminates the surroundings. These images are the work of Japanese photographer Eiji Ohashi, who takes his own unique approach to putting these machines under the spotlight, machines that, as time goes by, we don’t even seem to notice any more.
