The Romance of ‘Tokyo by Night’ Captured by a Frenchman

©Thibaut Buccellato
When he made his first visit to Japan, Thibaut Buccellato was surprised by the advertisements and screens he found everywhere in Tokyo. When the sun set, this young French photographer (23 years of age at the time) grabbed his camera and roamed the streets and alleys of Shinjuku, Dotonbori and Akihabara, districts where life moves at a rapid pace and where ‘everything is set to the rhythm of the music that comes out of the speakers in the street and advertising boards’.
Looking at Buccellato’s photos, this night-time version instils the viewer with an almost surreal sense of calm.
