Urara Tsuchiya’s cheeky erotic ceramics

©Ben Toms
Ceramicist Urara Tschiya explores human relationships with animals in provocative but humorous ways, imagining sexual relationships between the two species.
Surprisingly, her zoological orgies have a certain bizarre charm. These miniature ceramics are all hand painted in pastel colours. In an interview with i-D magazine she explains, ‘I think I would go a bit dead if I approached performance work without humour. I like to create works that are labour intensive. If I invest so much in it, I want at least to find it funny’.
Both absurd and decadent, the Japanese artist re-adresses the question of eroticism with a touch of English kitch, inventing a unique artistic language.
