Mirai is the new animated film by director Mamoru Hosada currently being released across Europe.
Kun, a jolly little boy suddenly finds himself destitute at the arrival of his younger sister in the family home. Jealous of the attention that Mirai receives, he struggles to find his place in the house and takes to hiding away at the bottom of the garden under a magic tree which takes him to a fantastical world where the past converges with the future. It is here that he gets to know different members of his family at different ages and time periods. It is through these exciting encounters that Kun grows up slowly but surely.
Thanks to these touching scenes of real life immersed in a parallel universe, the filmmaker is able to construct a narrative which has an unwavering, if sometimes fragile, link between sibling relations. Viewers become emotionally engaged with Kun’s story, transitioning from rejection to acceptation.
