Specialising in the re-release of rare and sometimes unknown soul albums, the label Cultures of Soul has turned its attention to 80s music from Japan and, more specifically, female singers. Compiled on a disk entitled ‘Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk – 1981 to 1988’, the songs reflect the unbridled optimism, technological success, excess and exuberance of this era when anything seemed possible.

‘Tokyo Nights’ features tracks from Hitomi Tohyama, Junko Ohashi, Mizuki Koyama, Kaoru Akimoto, Aru Takamura, Mariko Tone, Rie Murakami, RA MU and Kikuchi Momoko Seino. It’s fusion music, inspired by American R’n’B and mainstream Rock in equal measure. It’s the soundtrack to another era.
