MAD Architects’ Crazy Project for the Echigo-Tsumari Triennale

It’s the latest project from MAD Architects, the firm founded by Yansong Ma, for the Echigo-Tsumari Triennale 2018: the restoration of the 750m-long Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel nestled in Niigata Prefecture.
This time, the team has created five artistic spaces which evoke the natural elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth). Just before the tunnel is a small wooden hut that serves as a cafe and souvenir shop (selling locally-made artisanal products). On the upper level, there’s a hot spring foot spa. All through the gallery, lights illuminate the different parts. But the show-stopper comes right at the end, with an installation entitled The Light Cave, a pool of water with a mirror which reflects the outside world.
