Yanaka, the Hotspot for Cat Lovers

The Yanaka district of Tokyo is reputed for two reasons, firstly it is one of the rare remaining places where one is able to observe the vestiges of the old city (Yanesen). But also, because the streets are full of stray cats. If these felines chose this spot, it’s because of the abundant trees and temples in the area. Local residents have little say in the matter, and as such they’ve learnt to live with their furry neighbours, even adding a cat to the local flag.

It is little surprise that local businesses have also decided to make the most of this reputed co-habitation, selling anything vaguely cat related from dummies, to souvenirs, trinkets, cuddly toys and cakes. The cats themselves are crafty enough to wander wherever there is food. So to get up close to one, the best plan is approach with something to eat (even if the official advice is the contrary). If all else fails, you could try meowing to get their attention…
